Second Nazareth Baptist Church

Centennial Observance

"…showing to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done." Psalm 78:4

“God Was Our Help In Ages Past…He Is Our Hope To Come”

Preparation for our centennial began in July 2002 under the leadership of Trustee Johnnie Richardson and Rev. J. Walter Hills, Pastor at that time. Since that initial meeting several projects were undertaken and special events held. The centennial theme and logo were adopted by the church, Trus. Johnnie M. Richardson, Centennial Chairpersoncommittee sign-up was completed and the labor of love began. The Centennial was observed in various ways including the display of the centennial banner, the publishing of a pictorial directory and distribution of commemorative items, such as a cookbook, plate and Tee-shirt. Special events, exhibits, displays and performances were carried out each month. A souvenir journal was also published.

The observance of our centennial began in November 2002 with the initial Centennial Worship Fellowship Service. The services, held on second Sunday evenings, was an opportunity for the “sons and daughters of the house” to share their ministry with the home folks. Second Nazareth welcomed home Rev. Eddie Jackson and Gaines Baptist Church (Camden), Rev. Azilee Bishop and Grace Christian Ministries (Columbia), Rev. James Abrams, Jr., and St. James Baptist Church (Hopkins), Rev. Jimmy Duggan and County Grove Baptist Church (Winnsboro) and Rev. Gregory Cunningham and New Life Beulah Baptist Church (Hopkins). Rev. Henry Edmonds and Union Baptist Church, our sister church in the Gethsemane Baptist Association, celebrated with us in April 2003.

The first Sunday in the year marked the countdown to our milestone celebration. The Second Nazareth family, arrayed in the centennial colors of red and gold, corporately, once again, invoked the presence of God in our commemoration. God’s anointing rested on the voices of the Centennial Choir (75+) and the preacher’s preacher, Pastor Hills. The centennial observance was ushered in with praise and thanksgiving.

The Centennial Activity Committee helped to maintain the excitement with its monthly highlights. The committee coordinated with the Senior Ushers’ Ministry in its anniversary celebration to carry us back to the “old landmark,” the contributions of the pastors and church leaders were highlighted, an old fashion rally and old fashion dress Sunday were held, and the Jubilee Choir recalled the history of metered hymns and shaped-note singing. The Centennial Choir Concert blessed us through the ministry of music and a festive evening was shared at the Centennial Banquet.

The 2003 Revival Services featured the ministries of the churches birthed from Second Nazareth Baptist Church: Rev. Stanley Marshall and Jehovah Baptist Church, Rev. Anthony A. Dicks and Friendship Baptist Church, Dr. Michael Ross and New Ebenezer Baptist Church and Rev. Thurman Bowens and Trinity Baptist Church.

The History/Archives Committee offered a stroll down memory lane during the celebration. Photographs were displayed in the vestibule and Bowman Auditorium. The artifacts in the display cases in the vestibule have been rearranged. The newly refurbished Archives Room will be open periodically for you to view historical items such as light fixtures, choir robes, etc.

The Sunday morning worship services closed the observance with Dr. Paul Drummond of Charlotte, NC delivering the message. Music was rendered by the Centennial Choir.
